com unit 3 graphic design

Intro Hello my name is Sean and in this edition of career section I’m going to be talking about how to become a graphics designer and what does a graphic designer do.As you can expect in any job you will need to have the required skills and that’s where I’ll begin my show I, going to explain the needed qualifications, skills and wage details If that not enough information I’ll also tell you about work experience: is it necessary and if so how do you go about getting work experience.  Then I will be talking about which are the best universities to go to.So now let me see I said I’d start with skills so I suppose that’s what I should do.
What skills are needed?
  • As a graphic design
  • Key skills
  • Enthusiasm, Self-discipline, Flexibility and adaptability;
  • Excellent communication skills in order to interpret and negotiate briefs with clients;
  • Good presentation skills and the confidence to explain and sell ideas to clients and colleagues;
  • Time management skills and the ability to cope with several projects at a time;
  • The ability to work as a member of a team in a competitive culture.
Qualifications  Entry to HND or degree-level study is rare without first completing a foundation degree or BTEC national course in art and design. Any design-based course will give you a good grounding and knowledge of design/art history, printing techniques, etc. but of course most of your job applications will be based on your portfolio and the standard of your work. However it’s hard to get jobs without formal training.
How much can be earned? Salaries in GD are dependent on the firm and contact your working on.· Range of typical starting salaries: £14,000 – £22,000.· Range of typical salaries at senior level/with experience (e.g. after 10-15 years in role): £30,000 – £65,000.An experienced and valued freelancer can earn up to £40 an hour. The rate increases for designers with impressive track records.
Is work experience necessary? Unpaid work experience will give you the chance to develop your portfolio, make contacts and impress employers. You could also create a website to showcase your work.Competition for jobs is strong and not all the jobs are advertised,so as well as networking it is a good idea to approach companies and agencies directly.Visit the design directory on the British design innovation website to search for agencies and contacts.Work experience is vital so it will be easier to start off doing an apprenticeship or internship and hopefully get employed.

How to get work experience Most companies will be on the British Design Innovation website and information on opening and placement will be available there. You may also want to ask small design firms if you could do an internship or work placement
Is it necessary to go to a particularUniversity?  For the most part your design skills are more important then your university but some companies get students from certain universities and give them apprenticeships and internships.

Risk assessment is a step in a risk management procedure. Risk assessment is the determination of quantitative or qualitative value of risk related to a concrete situation and a recognized threat (also called hazard). Quantitative risk assessment requires calculations of two components of risk:, the magnitude of the potential loss , and the probability that the loss will occur. In all types of engineering of complex systems sophisticated risk assessments are often made within Safety engineering and Reliability engineering when it concerns threats to life, environment or machine functioning. The nuclear, aerospace, oil, rail and military industries have a long history of dealing with risk assessment. Also, medical, hospital, and food industries control risks and perform risk assessments on a continual basis. Methods for assessment of risk may differ between industries and whether it pertains to general financial decisions or environmental, ecological, or public health risk assessment.

Copyright is a legal concept, enacted by most governments, giving the creator of an original work exclusive rights to it, usually for a limited time.Generally, it is “the right to copy”, but also gives the copyright holder the right to be credited for the work, to determine who may adapt the work to other forms, who may perform the work, who may financially benefit from it, and other related rights. It is an intellectual property form (like the patent, the trademark, and the trade secret) applicable to any expressible form of an idea or information that is substantive and discrete. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copyright

Napster is a name given to two music-focused online services. It was originally founded as a pioneering peer-to-peer file sharing Internet service that emphasized sharing audio files, typically music, encoded in MP3 format. The original company ran into legal difficulties over copyright infringement, ceased operations and was eventually acquired by Roxio. In its second incarnation Napster became an online music store until it merged with Rhapsody on 1 December 2011.

Legal challenges

Heavy metal band Metallica discovered that a demo of their song ‘I Disappear’ had been circulating across the network, even before it was released. This eventually led to the song being played on several radio stations across the United States and brought to Metallica’s attention that their entire back catalogue of studio material was also available. The band responded in 2000 by filing a lawsuit against Napster. A month later, rapper and producer Dr. Dre, who shared a litigator and legal firm with Metallica, filed a similar lawsuit after Napster wouldn’t remove his works from their service, even after he issued a written request. Separately, both Metallica and Dr. Dre later delivered thousands of usernames to Napster who they believed were pirating their songs. One year later, Napster settled both suits, but this came after being shut down by the Ninth Circuit Court in a separate lawsuit from several major record labels (see below).

In 2000, A&M Records and several other recording companies, via the RIAA, sued Napster (A&M Records, Inc. v. Napster, Inc.) for contributory and vicarious copyright infringement under the US Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).[18] The music industry made the following claims against Napster:

  1. That its users were directly infringing the plaintiffs’ copyrights.
  2. That Napster was liable for contributory infringement of the plaintiffs’ copyrights.
  3. That Napster was liable for vicarious infringement of the plaintiffs’ copyrights.

Napster lost the case in the District Court and appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit. Although the Ninth Circuit found that Napster was capable of commercially significant non-infringing uses, it affirmed the District Court’s decision. On remand, the District Court ordered Napster to monitor the activities of its network and to block access to infringing material when notified of that material’s location. Napster was unable to do this, and so shut down its service in July 2001. Napster finally declared itself bankrupt in 2002 and sold its assets. from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napster

unit 3-4 research and radio program

secondary research is when you use other peoples research and readily available information so you don’t need to go out and create research on the subject your ask to research.the problem with secondary research is that it maybe out of date.  http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/EducationAndLearning/index.htm , i used directgov to check what the government were changing about government funding for education :

From Direct gov -the UK government’s digital service
Tuition fees are the amount universities or colleges charge you each year to study.
From September 2012 UK universities and colleges can charge:
Up to £9,000 a year for new full-time students
up to £6,750 a year for new part-time students
If you start a course before 1 September 2012, you won’t have to pay these higher fees.

task 4 article

Quantum Conundrum is a first-person action video game currently in development by Airtight Games and set to be published by Square Enix. Quantum conundrum will be similar to portal in that it is a first person puzzler that has a strange the story behind it.

Your a young boy, that is dropped off to visit your uncle, you notice something’s strange. First, he’s not there to when you arrive you. Second, there’s the explosion that happened just at you get there. And third, the house seems to be even weirder than you remembered it. Now, your job is to find and rescue your uncle, who’s a wacky inventor who created a device called, the Interdimensional Shift Device (or IDS), to switch between dimensions and solve puzzles. The game revolves around physics puzzles like if you had to move a fridge or sofa? There’s a dimension for it Switching to Fluffy Dimension and that sofa is now light as a feather. Need to get to an out of reach place turn the anti gravity on. Mind you every thing around you will start to float upward. There are several dimensions and as the game progresses you may have to use multiple dimensions at once or string them together

People who pre-purchase Quantum Conundrum on Steam get 10% off and get team fortress 2 items which s a free game on steam.

In quantum conundrum Fluffy Dimension is used to move heavy object like safes

interactive media -sound production

use of sound interactive media(IM)

within interactive media the are several different uses of sound like start up sounds for a pc, sound for immersion with in video games, and applications for phones and device of that nature.
as sound can help draw attention away from visuals and create a more atmospheric feel toward the medium your using this important to understand the process of how sound in uses within your choose field.
due to the nature of video games there aren’t usually a voice given to the main character (link)this has happened in multiple games because 1st it’s expensive to hire voice actor for long periods of time .2 because the voice might not be what the player is thought it would be and this would affect immersion as it makes you think the nature of the character   ledgend of zelda main character hasn’t had a proper speeching roll in the last 25ish years and mainly making these sounds http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DPMRPyZfftA
when a voice actor is used they are generally for character which already has an identity.when used for a main character you general don’t have much choice in terms of what you have to do and events are more scripted and there are less conversation then more text based games
The use of music in IM
Music was more influenced by melodies back in the 8bit generation where memory was a big issues because it had to be so simple & you spend hour listening if its annoy it could make or break a game. nowadays its more of a matter of whether or not the music is fitting.like you wouldn’t put a drum and bass song in a high fantasy game like world of Warcraft but it maybe suitable for an urban game like skate or Tony hawk series.not to say that a copyright audio is not on par with composed for the game it’s that music is a part of the games identity and without it,it would seem lose imagine mario without his tune  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lpk5U70MQBg (sorry about the jump noise)

navigating menus and Sound
when i title screen boots up it created a sound which it uses to get the users attention menus are used in IM for DVDs and in games skip to 2:25 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F1V-Zf_b01g in oblivion the menus design is that of a scroll or book and this is shown both visually and with audio hints like the page flicking noise between different menus.DVD menu have very simplistic audio on menus because it’s not used as much as in video games. ear-cons are used through-out menus and are used as indication that you have done something. in the legend of zelda series it is notable because of how obvious they are like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvODpHnV9o4 and 2:24 on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lc7lDkXn_sg are two instantly recognisable to the franchise. more used and familiar to non gamers are http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7nQ2oiVqKHw and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i9qOJqNjalE generally ear cons are compressed files so the audio quality is downgraded to save space on memory.
diegetic or non-diegetic.
“Diegetic sounds are a sound “told” such as a narrator were to say “bang!” sort of like an onomatopoeia. Anything voiced over or telling a story.”non” diegetic sound is called ‘mimetic’ sound.Think of dialogue when you say diegetic sound, since the root of the word is of latin origin. So it is a sound told.
Mimetic you can think easily as “mimed” a mime showing the sound. Thus, elements of a film can be “diegetic” or “non-diegetic.” These terms are most commonly used in reference to sound in a film, but can apply to other elements. For example, an insert shot that depicts something that is neither taking place in the world of the film, nor is seen, imagined, or thought by a character, is a non-diegetic insert. Titles, subtitles, and voice-over narration (with some exceptions) are also non-diegetic.”
from http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20071126162923AAoluw6 there are also two pics in the attactments that explain it aswell http://filmsound.org/terminology/diegetic.htm
How are sound effects used

in most games and movies you will find that most scene have something that is usually hard to record or impossible to get an original sound, you can’t have a hover car engine noise because it self explanatory because it doesn’t exist.the Foley artist jobs is to try and replicated what they believe the would be.by distorting real sounds like in the instance of a hover car recording you might get a hoover and record it and distort it by stretching the sound over a larger time then normal and combining it with the sound of perhaps a microwave to give it a more subtle sound.in the class of a jet you would combine different jet noise into one to get a better and clearer jet engine sound.the product best. examples:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mqNeisQWOXo&feature=related go to 3:31 for Foley created sounds before that is voice acting this explains most of the techniques used by Foley artists

quality and compression and its roll
when recording you use industry standard equipment for the most part.the only problem recording with is that its all record with high quality equipment this means the sound quality is high so the file size is much higher than normal this is fine for film and games for the most part but other devices with smaller memory suffer most sound in phones.in games is sound is compressed alot more than film because it has to be accessed more frequently. and there are more sounds in most games then Movies.C/D/DVD  has decent memory and has been the main way to get music in the past but is getting phased out by blu-ray with has some times 5 or 6 times the memory of a standard C/D/DVD so there is more space for sound so more layers and effects can be used.due to the many various of speakers it is hard to get sound quality good  on mobile devices because the differences between different device is causing changes in the sound produced by the device generally a good sound system is reserved for audiophiles but sound in computers is or has caught up because of sound cards with 7.1 audio so people are started to use a computer as the audio-system.

to have a compelling media piece you usually need to include sound in your animation or film.you need to have some thing even just the acousmatic music in limbo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD5F54SZkMA or fight music which will be used hundreds of times like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C34BzC7rnos&feature=related so it’s important to chose the right sound for your animation/film . usually games take place in sci-fi /post apocalipsis or medieval places so you will have to hire Foley, usually to create these sounds.
there are a few different sound production programs which can be used to edit, create or manipulate :
Logic Pro
alchemy
reaktor
logic’s sculpture
Audacity
Garage Band
all if not most of these programs are used to compose and edit sound and distort them though changing pitch ,amplitude, frequency and other techniques
logic pro is consider the best sound software because it comes with the biggest sound bank and has the most amount of customisation so sound can be changed with more variation the other programs.
The theory of sound
analog distortion  http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~jcgl/Scots_Guide/info/signals/analog/distort/distort.htm
in order for sound to be produce there must be something for it to travel though this is usually air and is created inside the device like headphones or a speaker of some kind this is how a speaker works in a sound system http://www.physics.org/article-questions.asp?id=54

unit 1 task 1 and 2

Changes in education
As we know changes within the education system have reeked havoc amongst young people. But the majority of young people are willing to endure hardship for their education. as we know youth unemployment is at 1million people across Britain and we feel that our opinion is not being listened to by MPs but we have voiced our concerns through protested and public sector strikes.it Seems that the con/lib dem coalition is being strained by the conflict over several issues.

Changes in tuition fees

From Direct gov -the UK government’s digital service
Tuition fees are the amount universities or colleges charge you each year to study.
From September 2012 UK universities and colleges can charge:
Up to £9,000 a year for new full-time students
up to £6,750 a year for new part-time students
If you start a course before 1 September 2012, you won’t have to pay these higher fees.

Education Secretary Michael Gove defended the rises by saying the grant had been “poorly targeted…you cannot spend money you do not have”.”Choices are dependent on the money – and where is the money coming from?”generally it’s considered unfair to dump up to 32,000pound on someone leash of all young people who are fresh on the job market, leading labour on the subject of education is Stephen Twigg Education Shadow Secretary , MP said:
“The plans by the Government to treble tuition fees are fundamentally unfair as it put the whole cost of degrees solely on students.

These proposals are also unnecessary as it is the Conservative and Liberal Democrat Government that has chosen to cut the higher education teaching grant by 80% when other public services are being cut much less.”
The government have put in replaces for EMA and other benefits and replaced it with a more rigorous assessment of students. Due to national debt grants and bursaries have been cut by up to 80%
If you’re aged between 16 and 19 years and think you might struggle with the costs for full-time education or training you may be eligible for a bursary.

Students in the following groups may receive the maximum bursary of £1,200 a year:
Young people in care
Care leavers
Young people claiming income support in their own name
Disabled young people who receive both Employment Support Allowance and Disability Living Allowance in their own name

Many people have praised the EMA system for its positive affects on attendance and participation on higher education students due to in supporting student based on family income so less well off student benefited the most here’s what
WKC Principal Andy Wilson had to say: “One of the most powerful things about the EMA is its impact on attendance and punctuality. Our attendance statistics have improved 7-8 per cent and last year we had a record year of returning students.”
Many had criticised that EMA because it has very few requirements to get it and that it should have been stricter generally I believe that the conservatives have lost touch with the people and are making hasty decision in their debt reduction to please private sector workers when this country can’t deal with mass unemployment from public sector cuts.
